Codelco Intranet — Diversity & Gender Equity Platform

Design of an internal web platform aimed at fostering cultural transformation within Codelco through awareness, inclusion, and cross-organizational connection — aligned with national standards for gender equality and work-life balance.

Client: Codelco
Date: 2017
Industry: Mining / Internal Communications / DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion)

Overview

The largest mining company in the world, Codelco sought to activate and evolve its internal Diversity and Gender Equity platform, a web-based initiative intended to support a cultural shift across all operational and executive levels. The platform had to inform, connect, and sensitize employees around topics of inclusion, gender equity, and work-life integration.

The design aimed to transform the platform into a central, dynamic, and user-friendly hub that would make diversity-related content accessible and relevant to all organizational levels, while complying with Chile’s NCh 3262 standard for gender equality and work-life reconciliation.

Scope of Work

  • UX strategy and user segmentation

  • UI design and design system integration

  • Information architecture and content hierarchy

  • Internal platform workflows and wireframes

  • Accessibility, responsiveness, and inclusivity in visual language

  • Content curation and structure to improve discoverability

Approach

The design strategy addressed three key communication goals: to inform, to connect, and to raise awareness.

Key contributions included:

  • User-Centered Structure: Organized content for multiple audience profiles — from field workers to executives and gender leaders — enabling quick access to relevant information based on user role.

  • Content Hierarchy & Navigation: Developed a clear information architecture that prioritized ongoing initiatives, goals, and real-time progress toward corporate DEI objectives.

  • Article & Content Organization: Curated and structured a wide range of content (concepts, definitions, examples, policies, updates) to ensure it was easily reachable, searchable, and relevant to users — reducing information overload while increasing visibility of key topics.

  • Dynamic Content: Designed modular components to highlight recent news, events, divisional milestones, and best practices from different centers, fostering cross-site visibility.

  • Visual Tone & Accessibility: Introduced an inclusive, warm visual language using neutral tones, human-focused imagery, and accessibility-conscious UI decisions to foster a sense of openness and trust.

  • Support for Standards (NCh 3262): Created a centralized space for each operational center to manage and communicate their specific actions and documents related to the implementation of the Chilean standard.

Impact

  • Supported cultural change by making diversity and inclusion content visible and approachable

  • Improved internal alignment around corporate goals in equity, diversity, and work-life balance

  • Fostered identification and participation of individuals working in Diversity, Gender & Conciliation (DGyC)

  • Increased engagement by making relevant content more discoverable and digestible for a broad audience
